She took me away with her

She took me away with her

After Norah Jones’ 2002 album “Come Away With Me”

Norah Jones sultry on the boombox
of my daughter’s Kamloops apartment
that hot weekend in 2003
says “Come away with me…”
takes me back to a 70s Vancouver basement suite

Lazy, laid back, take-a-break-from-life music
sweet as first dates
“you’ll be on my mind forever…”
sad as the realization
they are also the last
“It was just the season…”

Let this jazz be Aspirin
a wine cooler
blurring the hurt
into smoky memories
Pour piano’s liquid blue
into wounds
“Why can’t I melt
your cold, cold heart?”
Massage guitar’s rich burgundy
into all the cracks and crevices
that remain

  1. Great source of inspiration. I like your interplays of time and the way the poem itself forces the reader to slow down, read slowly, let the music “into all the cracks and crevices/ that remain”.

  2. I think I’m feeling some of your pain here, noticeable because there has also been a great divide between my eldest daughter and myself (not of my choosing.) I love the way you intertwine the music with images and emotions. Lovely Violet!

  3. I loved your imagery with beautiful phrases written comparing jazz. You and the words, and of course the music can certainly make our heart felt away.

  4. Really enjoyed this, especially the last stanza, you set up your own music, at once of and set against the background music, this poem has got something! A voice that makes it sing though the pain

love this. it makes me “feel” that rich, deep music, and the way music reaches deep into the “crevices” of the soul…

Great weave of poetic lines and lyrics. Love the capture of different times in your poem.

  7. So appreciate all your comments. I can tell Norah J. is a favorite of many! I find that music and poetry tug at the same cord at some level. This week I spent some time gathering other poems I’ve written about music and found they are more than a few!
