Looking back on April and most of May

I can’t believe that we’re almost into June! But the tree blossoms are fading while the daisies and wild roses pop out — proof positive that we’re well into spring here in the Lower Mainland of BC.

Art-wise it’s been a busy two months. During much of April I was preparing for our art club’s spring sale (May 4th). That went well. Since then I’ve been trying to keep up with the Paint Canada challenge I signed up for last November.

At that time, we had no inkling of the political ups and downs that would ignite Canadian patriotism this year. Since then I’ve often thought, how timely to be painting scenes of my beloved home and native land during this emotional time in our country’s history.

Our instructor in these tutorials (Brian Buckrell) paints in a more loose and abstract style than most of the art instructors I’ve had. I’m not sure if my style is changing as a result. Perhaps when looking back over the year of paintings, I’ll see a difference.

I’m pretty well caught up with the tutorials right now, which means I’ve completed painting 21 Canadian landscapes so far in 2025.

Below are six of my favourites from the last several months.

“Yukon Travels” – Acrylic on canvas panel, 12 x 12 x .125 inches.
“Chilkoot Trail” – Acrylic, on canvas panel, 12 x 12 x .125 inches. (Reference photo: Cathy Buckrell)
“Kananaskis Country – Rawson Lake” – Acrylic on plywood panel, 11.75 x 11.75 inches. (Reference: Brian / Cathy Buckrell)
“Lake Louise Ski Resort” – Acrylic on plywood panel, 11.75 x 11.75 inches. (Reference photo: Brian / Cathy Buckrell)
“Grain Silo” – Acrylic on paper, 8 x 8 inches. (Photo reference, Brian / Cathy Buckrell)
“Saskatchewan Memories” – Acrylic on plywood panel, 11.75 x 11.75 inches. (Photo reference, Brian / Cathy Buckrell)

I hope you enjoyed this little trip across western and middle Canada. We’re going from west to east so stay tuned for more scenes from Manitoba, Ontario, and points east in the months to come.
