Party Hostess

Party Hostess

Thinking it through and making lists
to cover all the bases.
Imagining each this or that
and putting myself through the paces.
I know I shouldn’t be uptight
I tend to be a perfecter.
I’d have more fun if I cut loose
this fete to faith and prayer.

This Sunday my husband and I are hosting a big family party. I love being part of this kind of thing as a helper but being in charge is certainly getting me out of my comfort zone. That is our topic this month and a good one for me to muse on this week.

Even thinking about it for this blog post has been helpful. I’ve been intentional about countering every worrisome “what if?” thought with thoughts and prayers of gratitude that this is happening and joy and anticipation as I look forward to getting together with my large extended family. I am trying to follow my own advice…

  1. The thing about entertaining for family is they love you anyway. I get more nervous when I have to do a dinner for friends. Entertaining in any way is out of my comfort zone. I think we must both be introverts. Using gratitude and prayer to get you through is a good plan.
I’m glad I saw your post. I forgot about posting today.

  2. I’m going to tell you a little story… my daughter had 12 bridesmaids in her wedding… lets not talk about the fact that her “Joe” came home from Desert Storm the end of Aug and she decided they were getting married the end of Oct. Two months to plan a wedding for a “princess” that had 12 groomsmen and 12 bridesmaids…and she wanted a homemade dress with a twelve foot train…
we rented the girls dresses because I set my foot down making them pay and time…they went to put them on at the church… shoulders bare and no bra inserts… we had boobs showing everywhere… after calming my daughter and assuring her I would fix this I got the duct tape out… Did anyone in the church know that everything wasn’t perfect… nope
I know you will do fine and if you forget something act like it was on propose

  3. Violet, I suspect you have things more under control than you think! And sometimes it’s the unexpected things that are most memorable and endearing about a party… I tend to OVERplan, and yes, I want everyone to be happy… I’ve learned to “keep it simple.” Less things to mess up. Also, to think of it as a memorable moment — think of ONE special thing you can do to make it a special moment. Doesn’t have to be big or complicated or expensive. You’re so creative and thoughtful and kind, I bet it will be a wonderful time! xo

  4. I can identify with your fears about being hostess. My favorite times to “hostess” are when friends want to use my house, but they’ll do everything else. I love how you’ve countered each worrisome thought with prayers of gratitude and joy for this family event. Blessings for a joyous time with those you love. (Sorry I posted on your personal devotional site, but I’m glad to have read your wonderful reflection there too.)
