Time to Eat

I’ve been drawing a lot of houses lately, doing the projects in the Urban Sketch Plus course. But once in a while I take a break from buildings and return to an old love – food. Today I’ll share a few food paintings along with a couple of light ditties—also food-related.

“Croissant & Berry Picnic” – Ink and Watercolour on paper 5×7 inches.

“Croissant & Berry Picnic” was drawn and painted for an Urban Sketch Plus “Picnic” challenge in August. Hopefully we’ll have a little more picnic weather before the autumn rains take charge

Busted

I snuck some cookies

ate them in bed

Mom found the crumbs

my face was read.

“Charcuterie” – Acrylic on bamboo board, 9.5 x 13.5 x .5 inches

When I saw a display of inexpensive bamboo boards in the local dollar store, I took one home, prepped it with a protective coat of acrylic medium and painted a charcuterie spread on it.

Project

I’m trying out new morning food

each week I buy a different box

“Michael’s Hens Lay Beautiful Eggs” – Acrylic on Stretched Canvas, 8 x 10 x .5 inches.

Our friend Michael raises chickens on his property in Sechelt. From time to time he gifts us with cartons of eggs. They are eggs of the most beautiful rich colours, which i can’t help but photograph and last week, attempted to paint.

Cost of Rebirth

Consider the egg

how it hides life

within a calcium cocoon

protects and nourishes

the chick within

until too large

restless and strong

pecks free

destroys its home

egg now mere shell

of former self

becomes nest detritus

Consider the egg

how it sustains life

surrenders to boil, scramble

stir, whip, mix

while we gain strength

from eating deviled

baked in cake

or drunk in nog

egg disappears

into our very DNA

of course we throw

the shells away

I hope your autumn is going well! I’m busy, getting ready for shows and a sale on November 1st. If you’re in the area, we’d love for you to visit us at the Fort Langley Hall between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
