I hope you’re enjoying your summer!
Here are a few summer poems for these end-of-July, beginning-of-August days along with a few photos of my town’s whimsical umbrella display from last summer.
HOLIDAYS
Another newly minted coin
rolls from the satin purse of night
adds yet more hours of wealth
to the collection
of summertime perfection.

Years ago before one holiday at the beach, we bought our kiddos a blow-up whale toy. It sure was cute–and unstable!

Killer Whale toy
rolly as the ocean
kids get toppled, dunked, Mom and Dad

SUMMER LULLABY
September to May need the embrace
of a heavy quilt
the sisterly hug of flannelette
but June, July and August throw off their covers
fling free from wrinkled cotton
turn-toss to the cool spot
pillow-flop to the underside
till fan’s feather fingers
massage shoulders, soothe arms
her oscillating click-click-click
the lullaby of a summer night.
