Walk the Beach

Are you taking some beach time this summer? For us It looks like actual time on the beach will be rare. And so I go there vicariously.

Last week I dug out a beach photo I took on our Salt Spring Island vacation in 2012 and did a painting. I could almost smell the ocean as I painted the colorful seaside garden.

“Seaside Garden” – Watercolor on paper, 12 x 16 inches

I’m pairing it with a beach poem to give you an imaginary beach day too.

Enjoy!

Walk the Beach

Set crickets flying
from crabby grass and weeds
shimmering on the sandy foreshore.

Hop logs of driftwood forest
clamber over algae-green rock
tricky as black ice.

Crunch broken shells.
Jingle the shingle
always at an angle.

Spring-step the spongy
wave-pressed sea grass
squish pungent onion bulbs of kelp.

Take off shoes
and let soles read
the Braille of wave-print sand.
